2 docked over alleged rice theft



An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Wednesday docked two men: Onitiju Sunday, 60 and Ismaila Seun, 30, over alleged stealing of 49 bags of rice.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Abdullahi Emmanuel, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4, 2019 at Omitoto area of Ile-Ife.

Emmanuel said that the defendants conspired to commit felony to wit stealing.

He said that they stole 49 bags of rice, a bag of honey, three and half cartoons of vegetable oil and three cartoons of Indomine noodles, valued at N744, 550.

According to him, the defendants broke into the shop of the complainant, Iroegbu Emmanuel, with intent to commit felony.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 413 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and breaking preferred against them.

The defence counsel, Mr Philip Fasanmi, pleaded for the bail of his clients in most liberal term.

Fasanmi told the court that the defendants would not jump bail, adding that they would produce substantial sureties.

Magistrate Bose Idowu granted each of the defendants bail of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Idowu said that the sureties must swear to affidavit of means and produce tax clearance certificates.

She then adjourned the case until Aug. 23 for hearing.
