2 drivers docked over alleged damage of truck windscreen

Two commercial drivers, Segun Athangbedu, 27 and Faruk Mutiu, 19, who allegedly damaged a truck’s windscreen valued at N110, 000, were on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendants, whose residential addresses were not provided, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, willful damage and breach of peace.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Samuel Isola, said that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace.

According to him, they climbed the driver side of a Howo truck with Reg. No. SMK 923 XN and dragged the steering with the driver, Aminu Lawal.

Isola said that the defendants also damaged the truck windscreen valued at N65, 000 and two supporting glasses and two doors glasses worth N45, 000, property of the complainant, Aminu Lawal.

The prosecutor told the court that the defendants committed the offences with others still at large on Oct. 22 at 9.00a.m. along Industrial Estate, Ilupeju, Lagos.

He said that the defendants got down from their vehicles and accused the complainant of bashing their cars.

“This led to an argument which made the defendants to drag the steering with the complainant,’’ the prosecutor said.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs I. A. Abina, admitted each of the defendants to N20, 000 bail with one surety each in like sum.

Abina ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and have evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The magistrate then adjourned the case until Dec. 18 for mention.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the offences violated Sections 168, 350 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

Willful damage and conspiracy are punishable with two years imprisonment, while breach of peace attracts six months jail term for offenders upon conviction.
