2 employees docked over alleged theft of goods worth N60m

Two employees who allegedly burgled their employer’s warehouse and stole cartons of champagne and herbal drinks worth N60 million, were on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendants, Olajide Popoola, 52; and Adewale Agboola, 40; both residents of Lagos Island, are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing and burglary.

The Prosecutor, ASP. Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the defendants who entered a not-guilty plea to the charges against them, committed the offences between 2017 and May 2019 at No. 9A Offin St. Lagos Island.

Nwangwu alleged that the defendants conspired with others now at large, to break into the warehouse of Olaide Badmus, their employer to steal goods worth N60 million.

“The complainant claimed that the defendants and their accomplices had been stealing from the warehouse since 2017 but there was no evidence to accuse them of the crime.

“Badmus said the culprits were eventually caught by security guards who saw them loading a vehicle with cartons of drinks from the warehouse.

“Popoola and Agboola were apprehended while their accomplices are still at large,’’ the prosecutor said.

Nwangwu said that the offences contravened Sections 287, 308 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 308 attracts seven years jail term for burglary, if found guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Aje-Afunwa, granted the defendants N4 million bail each with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

She noted that one of the sureties must be a land owner.

The case was adjourned till Aug.15 for mention.
