By Funmilola Gboteku
Lagos, Feb. 20, 2019 Two labourers, who allegedly stole N285,000 from a shop, were on Wednesday charged before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The defendants – Mohammed Awal, 24, and Shefiu Garuba, 21 – both of whom reside on Pallet Bridge, Ijora-Badia, Lagos, are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and assault.

They, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Friday Inedu, said that the defendants committed the offences in conspiracy with some others still at large, on Feb. 2, on Moshood Abiola Way, Ijora-Badia, Lagos.

He said that the defendants and the accomplices, forcefully entered a shop belonging to one Mr Nosiru Qudus and stole the sum.

Inedu added that the defendants hit Qudus with a metal on the head, when he attempted to call for help.

He said that a woman who had a shop opposite Qudus’s saw what happened and alerted nearby policemen, who arrested the defendants, while their accomplices escaped with the money.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 173, 287, and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 287 prescribes three years’ imprisonment for stealing, while Section 411 stipulates a two-year jail term for conspiracy.

The Magistrate, Mr T.O. Babalola, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Babalola said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case until April 3 for mention.
