Lokoja, Feb. 08, 2019 (NNN) Kogi council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Friday tasked politicians to play the game by the rules and eschew violence in the 2019 general elections.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the congress of the council in Lokoja, signed by the chairman, Alhaji Adeiza Momoh-Jimoh and secretary, Alhaji Seidu Ademu.

The congress urged the politicians to avoid do-or-die politics, or anything and everything that could jeopardise the lives of the people, saying that life is sacrosanct.

The congress also cautioned the people, particularly youths, not to allow themselves to be used as agents of violence.

Another issue canvassed in the communiqué was the need to educate public office holders and politicians on online journalism as not all on-line reports are products of qualified and registered journalists.

The communiqué urged members of the profession to take their personal safety and security seriously and avoid airing or publication of unverified election results as “You have to stay alive to report the elections.”

The union also enjoined journalists to be non-partisan and strive to be acquainted with the electoral laws and guidelines on coverage of elections.

It further appealed to members to be fully registered and ensure they obtain required credentials and be up to date in the payment of their check-off dues.

The congress commended the appointment of the former chairman of the state council, Alhaji Ali Atabo as a National Trustee of the Union. (NNN)
