National Development: Lawyer urges NGOs to focus

Dr Ignatius Adeh, a Business Lawyer, on Thursday, advised registered Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the country to remain focused and committed to their mandate toward national development.

Adeh gave the advice during a meeting organised by the Nigeria Entrepreneurs Forum (NEF) in Abuja.

NEF is a private sector-driven organisation which enjoys support from public sector establishments.

It is a platform for Nigerian business owners to interact, network and do business for growth, prosperity and development as Nigeria heads more toward private sector driven economy.

The lawyer, who urged NGOs to be transparent and accountable in order to survive, added that “I discovered that most of the time, NGOs lack focus and dedication after working for a while.

“Those who form NGOs must have passion, emotion and zeal, but most times we have people who want access to fund, and as soon as they get grant, they lose interest and focus.”

He further urged NGOs to be issue based and determined.

The NEF President, Dr Sidney Inegbedion, said that the meeting was designed to encourage business startups and sustain existing ones.

He added that “ NEF planned to evolve strategies to address unemployment rate in the country. If we do not start planning ahead by creating jobs for Nigerians, we stand to face challenges in the near future.”

Inegbedion noted that the objectives of NEF included creating forum where enterprises could thrive through transparency, discipline and equity, while achieving corporate goals as source for advocacy on issues on enterprise growth and economic freedom.

A participant, Mrs Fatima Gambo, applauded the NGO for organising the meeting, pointing out that information she had acquired would help her to set up a business after retirement.

Gambo, a Deputy Director, Secondary Education Board, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) noted that she only had few years more in service.

The theme of the meeting is “ Where Access Leads to Opportunities.”
