A 55-year-old estate agent, Olusegun Adesanya, who allegedly defrauded a landlord of N250,000 house rent was on Friday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Adesanya, a resident of Obanikoro area of Lagos, was charged with stealing.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between February and April at No. 10, Bola Adewunmi str., Obanikoro estate, Lagos.
According to her, the defendant rented out a self-contained apartment for N250,000 to a tenant and refused to remit the money to the landlord, Mr Adebayo Binitie.
The prosecutor further said that it was not the first time the defendant had withheld rent money from the landlord in his two years of employment as his agent.
The offence contravened Section 287 (9) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 287 (9) stipulates seven years imprisonment for the offence of stealing by agent, upon conviction.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oghere, granted the defendant N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Oghere said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until May 22 for mention.
