FG warns against improper disposal, management of industrial waste

The Federal Government has warned against improper disposal, ineffective management of industrial waste to secure clean, healthy environment.

Mr Bitrus Nabasu, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST), made the call at a two-day workshop organised by the ministry on Friday in Abuja.

The workshop is on promotion of clean technologies for management of toxic metals from leather and petrochemical industries in Nigeria with the theme “Clean Technologies Development and the Issues of Waste Management.”

Nabasu said such effort was crucial toward the actualisation of the UN Sustainable Development goals (SDGs).

According to him, such industrial waste as effluent waste from tannery, chemicals and petrochemicals, mining, paints and other waste discharges create major environment issues of great concerns across the country.

He added that “the most common method of waste disposal in Nigeria are waste burial, open dumping, waste transfer from one region to another and incineration, found to be ineffective and detrimental to public health and the environment.

“The open air burning often result to pollution due to release of gases such as carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, oxides of nitrogen, among others.

“Also, waste discharge by waterways has the potential to pollute the land, lakes and rivers, thereby causing harm to the ecosystems.”

The permanent secretary, however, said that government was set to use “Fenton Oxidation Technology (FOT)” to manage waste

According to him, the technology is cost effective with minimal energy requirement and reduction in environmental pollution arising from effluent waste discharge.

He said “this workshop, therefore, is in further commitment of our desire to sensitise and create awareness on existing technologies, how to harness and deploy them as a tool for sustainable development and waste management control.

“This has become necessary due to its non-hazardous impact on the ecosystem and on humans.”

Mr Akinyemi Oyefeso, the Director of Chemical Technology Department in the ministry, said clean technology perspective in leather, petrochemical and mining industries increased efficiency and decrease environmental hazards.

He said “clean technology improves environmental performance, using new technologies that can significantly reduce the amount of toxic material in the effluent discharge.

“The FOT, which is Advanced Oxidative Processes (AOP), can be applied as pre-treatment process to degrade non-biodegradable organic matters in industrial wastewater.”

The process, he said, may be used for wastewater, contaminated soils and sludge with the following actions; organic pollutant destruction, toxicity reduction, biodegradability, improvement, odor and color removal, destruction of resin in radioactive contaminated sludge.

The director added that citizens ought to be concerned about the future generation and the kind of environment they lived in, whether toxic or healthy.

He announced that government had launched a 30-billion naira intervention fund for exploration and research in that regard.
