Jos,May 17,2019 The European Union (EU) has called for the establishment of a department of quality assurance at the Plateau Ministry of Water Resources.

Mr. Jephthah Daleng, the Project Officer, EU’s Technical Assistant to Civil Societies Organisations (CSOs) in Plateau,  made the call on Friday in Jos at a two-day workshop organised for CSOs and the media on human rights based approach to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.

Daleng said that if the department was established, it would be responsible to ensure that water pumped out to the public was highly potable.

He revealed that based on the Nigerian constitution,  every Nigerian had the right to adequate potable water supply and sanitation.

He called on the state to adopt appropriate measures towards the full realisation of the rights.

Daleng revealed that if the state’s water law bill was passed into law,  it would protect the water rights of the people and lead to the establishment of a water commission and water trust fund .

He called on the government through the ministry of water resources, to intervene in ensuring the enforcement of laws to control human activities from polluting the various water sources serving the public.

Miss Grace Damulak, one of the participants from the media, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria disclosed that the training had given her more insights into better ways of reporting Water, Sanitation and Hygiene issues (WASH).
