Court admits civil servant N3m bail over alleged job scam

An FCT High Court in Apo, on Thursday, admitted a civil servant, Elvis Okenenyi, to bail in the sum of N3 million, for alleged employment scam.

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) charged Okenenyi , a staff of Federal Ministry of Aviation, with alleged N1 million fraud and forgery of documents.

Justice Silvanus Oriji admitted the defendant to bail, after  he pleaded not guilty to the seven counts bordering on fraud and forgery.

Oriji also ordered the defendant to produce two sureties in like sum, who must be a civil servant on grade level 12 residing in the FCT.

The judge ordered that defendant would  be remanded in prison custody, if he is unable to meet up with the bail conditions.

Oriji adjourned the case to June 27 for hearing.

Okenenyi, a level 14 officer in the Ministry of Aviation is standing trial on a seven count charge of fraud and forgery of employment letter.

The ICPC Counsel, Mr Suleiman Abdulkareem, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 2015.

He said that the defendant by false pretence obtained the sum of N1 million from an applicant, Titus Tavershima, under guise of securing employment for him.

He said that the defendant further forged a letter of appointment with intent to support his claims.

Abdulkareem also reported that the defendant also forged a letter of promotion to the post of senior executive officer to back up his claim.

He further informed the court that the defendant also forged an Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System IPPIS registration print out to claim Tavershima’s details is on the IPPIS platform.

The offence contravened Section 1(3) Advance Fee Fraud & Other Related Offences Act 2010 and section 364, 363 of the penal code law 1990.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Paul Attai, applied for the bail of his client stating that He will not jump bail.
