Edo council chairman empowers 40 widows to become self-reliant

Benin, June 11, 2019 Mr Destiny Enabulele, the Chairman of Egor Local Government Area of Edo, said that 40 widows had so far benefitted from his economic empowerment programme.

Enabulele made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin City on Tuesday,  saying that the objective was to make them economically self-reliant.

He said that the monetary empowerment was specifically initiated for petty traders and that the money was non-refundable.

Although he declined to disclose the amount involved, he said the choice of business by the beneficiaries determined the amount they each received.

He listed the businesses to include frying of bean cake, provision stores, dry, fresh or iced fish business, sales of kerosene and recharge cards, among others.

He said: “My choice of empowerment projects was to reduce hardship faced by residents, especially widows, in our rural communities.”

The council boss further spoke on developmental projects his administration had executed in the area in order to touch lives and tranform the area.

“I graded some roads to ease transportation in the area and enable farmers to evacuate their farm produce easily to other areas.

“Presently, the council is distributing chairs and desks to schools to ensure a comfortable and smooth teaching and learning environment,’’ Enabulele said.
