FGN/IFAD Additional Financing targets more women in agriculture — Country Officer



The Federal Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) says it targets more women participation in agriculture under its additional financing.

IFAD Country Programme Officer, Dr Ben Odemena disclosed this during a tour of VCDP farmlands at Omor in Ayamelum Local Government Area on Thursday.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the goals of the programme include reducing rural poverty, increasing food security and accelerating sustainable economic growth.

The programme aims to reduce vulnerability for smallholder farmers, particularly women and young people, who engage in rice and cassava farming.

According to him, the findings will enable the team design support for more women participation in the VCDP Additional Financing which is expected to terminate in 2021.

The Country Programme Officer, who expressed happiness at the level of farmers’ progress and successes, noted that it was a fulfillment of the aim of the programme in the country.

He commended the Commodity Agricultural Forum (CAF) platform created by the programme for farmers, marketers, agro-dealers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector under the programme in the state.

Odemena, who interacted with farmers, noted that CAF had facilitated businesses for farmers, engaged government on policy dialogue to solve rural farming problems and established financial linkages.

Earlier, the CAF Chairman in Ayamelum Local Government Area, Mr Innocent Okeke commended the FGN and IFAD-VCDP for their immense support in boosting the agricultural sector.

Okeke, however, appealed that women should be considered support for in the area of simple machines and land development to enable them participate effectively in agriculture.

NAN reports that the field trip featured interactive session with various farmer organisations such as CAF, Smart Weather Soldiers and Seed Entrepreneurs, among others under the VCDP.
