UN: At least 11 civilians killed in operation by Afghan forces

Published

The UN on Wednesday said it was deeply concerned by reports of an operation by pro-government forces in Afghanistan’s south-eastern Paktia province that killed at least 11 civilians.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in a tweet said harm to civilians must stop, noting that the search operation took place during the Eid-el-Adha holidays.

A provincial council member, Allah Bahramzoi, put the number of civilians killed at least 13, adding that most of them were university students, and a school headmaster, reportedly killed in an Afghan security forces operation.

Eid-el-Adha is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide and is also called “the feast of sacrifice’’.

According to Bahramzoi, the operation was conducted by Afghan security forces and took place in Zurmat district of the province.

A quarterly report published by UNAMA at the end of July, pro-government forces had so far killed more civilians than anti-government elements in the first six months of the year, though militants killed more civilians.

Afghan security forces and foreign allies had so far killed about 717 civilians, while militants killed 531. In all, 1,366 civilians were killed in the conflict, a decrease of 21 per cent in the same period in 2018.

However, the total number of people killed or injured by pro-government forces rose to 1,397, or 31 per cent increase, with search operations and airstrikes the main cause.

Civilian casualties caused by anti-government elements, including the Taliban and Islamic State, totalled 1,968, down 43 per cent in 2018. (dpa/NAN)

The Kuwaiti Permanent Representative to the UN, Mansour Al-Otaibi, said his country was looking forward to the efforts exerted by Saudi Arabia in hosting talks in Jeddah between Yemeni government and representatives of the Southern Transitional Council (STC).

Al-Otaibi said Kuwait hoped that the final outcome of the talks would lead to the return of security and stability in a way that preserves Yemen’s unity and sovereignty over its territory.

However, the Aden-based STC previously said its forces rapidly advanced on the ground and declared full control over the neighbouring province of Abyan.
