5 timber contractors docked over alleged malicious damage

Five timber contractors on Wednesday appeared before an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State over alleged malicious damage.

They were charged for damaging 200 logs of timber, valued at N2.8 million.

The contractors are Ademola Ademoni, 42; Ayodeji Adegbehin, 35; Adelana Idebi, 48; Onolade Akingbohun, 50; and Saturday Ogunwa, 45.

The defendants, who are of no fixed addresses are being tried on a two-count charge of felony and malicious damage.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Zedekiah Orogbemi, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Feb. 28 around 6:30 p.m. at Oluwa Gantry along Aye-Ore Road in Okitipupa.

Orogbemi said that the defendants set fire on 200 logs of timber, belonging to one Adeyemi Adeyinka.

He said that the offences contravened Sections, 517 and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Musa Al-Yunus, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with a surety each in like sum.

Al-Yunus said that the sureties must produce evidence of one year tax clearance paid to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case until May 24 for further hearing.
