5 vagrants in court for allegedly causing public nuisance

The police on Tuesday arraigned five vagrants in a Karu Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly causing public nuisance within Karu,

The police charged Upev Tekkimbi, 34, Kenneth Isaac, 23, Ushemba Ter, 26, Henry Otase, 29 and Rabiu Mohammed, with constituting public nuisance.

They pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecution Counsel, Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that they were arrested on Jan. 14 by a team of policemen led by SP Moses Maku, who is attached to the Karu Police Station.

Adeyanju said that following intelligence reports on criminal activities within the area, the team raided a black-spot within Karu jurisdiction from at midnight.

He said the spot is used by criminals as hideout to perpetrate their evil acts and when the defendants were arrested, they could not give satisfactory account of themselves during police investigation.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 198 of the Penal Code.

The Judge, Abdullahi Jibrin, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N10, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.

Jibrin adjourned the case untill Feb.10 for hearing.
