Agent docked for allegedly defrauding accommodation seekers

An estate agent, Segun Ajagbe, on Tuesday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding  two accommodation seekers of N1.5 million.

Ajagbe, 46, who resides at Alapere in Ketu, near Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of fraud, obtaining under false pretence and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Donjour Perezi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 3, 2019 at Bola Owoduni Street at Alapere.

Perezi said that the defendant collected N80, 000 from one Oluwaseun Ajagbe and N720, 000 from one Uchenna Ogbonna on the pretext that he would secure apartments for them, a representation he knew was false.

He said the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by obtaining the money from the complainants without providing accommodation for them.

“The defendant, who had no accommodation to rent to the complainants refused to refund their money,” the prosecutor said.

Perezi said the offences violated Sections 287, 314 and 325 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that Section 314 prescribes 15-year jail term for false pretence, while Section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs Bukola Mogaji, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mogaji ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until Feb. 24 for mention.
