Alert sounded in India’s western coastal areas ahead of Cyclone Nisarga

An alert has been sounded in India’s western coastal areas and the financial capital Mumbai ahead of the arriving Cyclone Nisarga which is expected to make the landfall on Wednesday.

To carry out relief and rescue work during and after the cyclone, several teams of the country’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed, confirmed an official source.

This would be the second successive cyclone to hit India in two weeks. Super cyclone “Amphan” had hit the eastern coastal areas on May 20, affecting several districts in the states of Odisha and West Bengal, leaving behind a tale of devastation.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, the cyclone Nisarga is most likely to make the landfall somewhere in northern Maharashtra or southern Gujarat, and then pass on towards the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

As precautionary measures, fishing activities have been totally suspended and process to evacuate people living in low lying areas has already begun. “Movement in motor boats and small ships is unsafe,” said an official statement issued by the federal Ministry of Earth Science.

Local media reports suggested that the storm is currently a deep depression over the Arabian Sea, which is the third category on the IMD’s 8-level cyclone classification system.

The storm is expected intensify into a cyclonic storm later in the day, and then into a severe cyclonic storm by late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning as it makes the landfall.

The cyclonic storm could bring very-heavy to extreme rainfall over Maharashtra’s coastal districts especially Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigarh and Sindudurgh districts, said the IMD.
