Anambra unveils programmes to boost hospitality, tourism sub-sectors

Anambra government on Thursday unveiled programmes designed to boost the hospitality and tourism sub-sectors in the state.

The Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, Culture and Tourism, Mrs Sally Mbanefo, announced the programmes at a news briefing shortly after meeting with stakeholders in the hospitality industry in Awka.

Mbanefo listed the training of 2,500 youths on the use of e-commerce portal and launch of 100 Innoson Manufacturing Vehicles to convey customers to and from hotels and airports as part of the programmes.

Others included the setting up of a committee to organise regular events that would attract visitors into the state and the introduction of Anambra tourism desk in other states with airports.

She said the desk would provide tourists and visitors easy access to information on the hospitality and tourism sub-sectors of the state, among others.

Mbanefo said Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra was determined to boost the hospitality and tourism sub-sectors through activities that would lead to the influx of investors and indigenes in diaspora to the state.

“We created websites for the youths and made them have access to a central e-commerce portal of the state government to market these hotels and attract investors.

“It is a platform to also encourage the Nigerians in diaspora to come and explore the rich culture of Anambra.

“These programmes were initiated by the Ministry of Diaspora in collaboration with the Ministries of Youth Empowerment and Transport as well as VICO Group and Innoson Motor Manufacturing Company.

“It became imperative to initiate the programmes following the findings from a research carried out a few months ago on the challenges of running hotel businesses in the state,” she said.

Mbanefo listed poor service delivery, poor maintenance culture, inconsistency of employees, poor road network and erratic power supply as some of the challenges.

The commissioner said the hospitality sub-sector was also faced with the challenge of over taxation which, she said, had been resolved by the state government.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Youths Empowerment, Mr Afam Mbanefo, said the programmes were aimed at promoting the ease of doing business in Anambra.

According to him, what we did was to introduce a tourism product for the hotels and transportation sub-sector, where the youths will be empowered through training to help with hotel bookings online and transportation services.

“The purpose is to standardise our hospitality activities and attract the world to the state,” he further said.
