APC Scandinavia hails renaming of Abuja Stadium after Abiola

The All Progressives Congress, Scandinavia chapter, has commended President Muhamnadu Buhari for renaming the National Stadium, Abuja after late Chief MKO Abiola.

Mr Ayoola Lawal,Chairman of the chapter, gave the commendation in a statement emailed to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday from his Stockholm, Sweden base.

NAN reports that the president had announced the renaming of the stadium at a national programme to commemorate the June 12 1993 election on Wednesday in Abuja.

Buhari said the renaming of the stadium after Abiola and the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day were to honour the sacrifices made by the presumed winner of the historic election.

Lawal said the renaming of the stadium after the late politician was a good step, adding the president deserved accolades for what he called the bold step.

He said the honour was befitting of Abiola as he was a great lover of sports and did a lot to promote it when he was alive.

“The renaming of the National Stadium, Abuja after MKO is another welcome development that is worth commendation. It is appropriate and befitting of the late MKO.

“Abiola, the Pillar of Sports in Africa, did well for sports until his death about 25 years ago.

“He will be more than happy in his grave that all he fought and died for did not end in vain.

“MKO Abiola, who was known to be the greatest philanthropist of all time, contributed enormously to various sectors of the economy and beyond, including sports.

“It was quite unfortunate that no national sports arena was named to immortalise his name after his untimely death until President Buhari did.

“The president has with the step, walked the path of greatness by acknowledging the huge kindness and contributions of MKO to sports in Nigeria and Africa,” he said.

Lawal said that Buhari had put the ‘twisted story” of June 12 in the right perspectives with the honour done Abiola and recognition of the day as Democracy Day.

“Nigerians can now be proud of the realisation of June 12 ,which was never completed due to a certain class of misguided military and political elite, who put their interests above the collective interests of Nigerians,” he said.

Lawal said history would be kind to Buhari for all his actions and pronouncements on the June 12,1993 election.

He urged all Nigerians to believe in the president and give his administration the necessary support to deliver in its last four years.
