Association registers 1,500 dry season maize farmers in Jigawa

The Jigawa Chapter of the Maize Farmers Association of Nigeria says it has so far registered 1,500 farmers for 2020 dry season farming in the state.

Alhaji Yusuf Hassan, the state Chairman of the association disclosed this while speaking with the Nigeria News Agency in Hadejia on Monday.

Hassan said that the association targeted 6,000 farmers at the end of the exercise.

He said farmers captured in the registration would benefit from farm inputs through loans under the Federal Government Anchor Borrowers’ Programme.

Hassan said each of the farmers would receive between N90,000 and N100,000 worth of inputs including fertiliser, pesticides, herbicides, seeds, sprayer and bags, under the programme.

The chairman identified indiscriminate release of water by dams in neighbouring states as one of the major problems facing farmers in the state.

“ In the 1980’s, our neighbouring Challawa, Kafin-Chiri, Bagauda and Tiga dams used to release water flowing along the stretch of River Wudil in Jigawa on Saturdays and Sundays.

“But now, they wait until when the dams are filled up and crops are grown during rainy season before releasing the water.

“As a result, many farmlands, crops and even buildings are destroyed every year by floods triggered by such indiscriminate release of water,” he said.

Hassan called on the Federal Government to caution the dams’ authorities against such act which he said was crippling farming activities in the state.

He said annual total maize production in the state stood at 150 tonnes, noting that the figure could rise to 200 tonnes with more support from the state and federal governments.

He listed major maize producing areas in the state to include Jahun, Taura, Miga, Kafinhausa, Auyo, Hadejia and Guri Local Government Areas (LGAs).
