Heavy rains and flooding killed at least 21 people in the southern African island nation of Madagascar, officials said on Friday.

At least 20 others remained missing on Friday on the popular tourist island, which has been hit by torrential rains since the start of this week, according to the country’s national disaster management office.

On Thursday, authorities had placed the death toll at 13 people.

Almost 90,000 people have been affected by the bad weather, disaster management said.

Torrential rains also made important roads impassable, while a dam near the town of Tanambe had burst, flooding surrounding villages and farmland.
