Athletics Trials: I’m not discouraged placing 5th — Olowookere

David Olowookere, a 400m hurdles gold medalist at the 2018 National Sports Festival (NSF), on Friday said he was not discouraged with the fifth position he posted at the athletics national trials.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) organised a national trials for home-based athletes ahead of the African Games in Rabat, Morocco from June 24 to June 27.

Olowokere told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that he was going to re-strategise by correcting his mistakes.

“The end of a competition is the beginning of another competition. So, training starts immediately because I’m looking forward to perfecting some of my mistakes that led to the upset,” he said.

The upset from Timothy Emoghene placed him in first position with a time of 51.24secs; Henry Okorie came second with 51.59secs, while Bakare Busayo came third with 52.21secs.

Mba Romanus came fourth with a time of 54.02secs; Olowookere placed fifth with a time of 54.51secs, while Yusuff Oluwashinayomi was sixth with a time of 57.41secs.

“Running my season’s best at the trials is a motivation on its own, looking back to the pains and trials I’ve been through from the beginning of the season.

“Running 51.83secs also cleared the doubt of some of my colleagues and haters who didn’t believe my feat at the National Sports Festival.

“Regarding the upset, I’m not moved by that at all because as a Christian, my Bible says for everything there’s season and in everything give thanks to God,” he said

“Representing the country is the prime of every athlete’s dream. I will be grateful and happy to be in the team for the African Games.

“I pray to keep disappointing all those who do not believe in me.’’

The All Nigeria championships will hold sometime in July.
