Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has urged security agencies in the state not to be deterred by the attack on the state deputy governor’s entourage that claimed five lives.

The governor gave the advice on Wednesday in Lafia at an emergency security meeting following the incident.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the incident occurred at about 6 p.m. on Tuesday along Nasarawa Eggon-Akwanga road, leading to the death of three policemen and two civilians.

The deputy governor, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, and his entourage who were on their way to Abuja for a function, ran into a robbery operation in the area.

In the attempt to clear the road for commuters, the robbers attacked the security escort killing three policemen, a driver and another yet to be identified civilian.

Sule said the state government had reported the incident to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He said that the police high command had assured that tactical and aerial support would be deployed to fish-out criminal elements around the mountainous terrain.

The governor said that the incident tended to dent the achievement of the security agencies in the state in recent time, but urged them not to relent.

“I am aware of your (security) efforts in securing the state in recent time and I encourage you not relent in view of the unfortunate incident of yesterday (Tuesday).

“Continue to do your best in your mandate of protecting the people.

“This (incident) has come from people who do not believe in what is right and who do not believe in progress. We cannot allow them to overcome us,’’ Sule said.

He said intelligence reports indicated that most of the criminal elements operating in the state were those dislodged from other parts of the country.

The governor promised to give maximum support to security agencies to effectively discharge their responsibility of protecting lives and property.

Sule vowed that he would not rest on his oars until criminal elements that had infiltrated the state were flushed out.

He condoled with the families of the victims over the incident and assured them of the state government’s support.
