AU Commission creates networking portal for African science, technology professionals

Abuja, April 23, 2019 The African Union-Scientific, Technical and Research Commission (AU-STRC) has created a portal, the African Union Network of Sciences (AUNS), to facilitate networking among individuals working in the field of science and technology in Africa.

The Executive Director, AU-STRC, Dr Ahmed Hamdy, disclosed this during an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday.

Hamdy said the AUNS portal was a virtual network that involved different individuals working together in different fields of study to address science and technology development challenges in Africa and the Diaspora.

He added that “the AUNS portal was developed to create synergy among scientists, technologists, researchers and social scientists in Africa and at large.

“I call on students in higher institutions, professors and everyone with a desire to advance science and technology in Africa to create an account on the portal.

“Anyone willing to register should just create an account on the AUNS portal to become a member, and start to use the portal to interact and share ideas like every other social media,’’ he said.

The executive director noted that one thing stood out on the AUNS portal, which was its digital library, saying that it was up-to date, very resourceful and credible.

He added that the materials on the portal were of very high quality and would be of immense benefit to members.

Hamdy said that people who networked on the platform would share ideas that could help in proffering solutions on issues bordering on science, innovation and technology in Africa.

He added that maximising the use of the platform by members would help the commission to achieve one of its objectives contained in the STISA 2024.

“The Science Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2024 (STISA 2024) is a policy analysis which outlines the key socio-economic priority areas, which Africa has to collectively address through scientific research and development.

“We can only achieve this by collectively addressing Africa’s challenges in science and technological advancement.

“So, more persons are encouraged to register their membership on the platform, the portal is user-friendly and membership is free,’’ Hamdy said.
