Badminton: Nigeria targets trophy in Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt, April 24, 2019 The Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) says its target is to win the All Africa Badminton Mixed Team Championships 2019 trophy in Port Harcourt and represent Africa in Sudirman Cup in China.

Francis Orbih, President, Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), made the assertion on the sidelines of the ongoing All Africa Senior Badminton Championships in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Orbih disclosed that Nigeria had not won the mixed team event on home soil and was ready to break the jinx.

“We didn’t win mixed team event during COJA 2003 and also at the All Africa Senior Championship in Bauchi 19 years ago.

“So, it’s a major target, we want to break the jinx, we want to lift that trophy here on home soil,” he said.

According to Orbih, the facility in Port Harcourt for the badminton championships is a world class infrastructure that has been attested to by the President, Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) and its officials.

“The courts are fantastic as attested to by the BCA President and all the officials, and the organisation of the competition is top-notch.”

Orbih said that BFN would set target for the Tokyo Olympics after qualifying by crossing all the bridges.

He said that BFN was hopeful that five persons would get the needed points to qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo.

“We want to do well at the Olympics because what has happened in the past is that, every African country that qualified got beaten in the first round.

“So, we only go there to make the numbers, and this has been very consistent with African badminton.

“We want to go out there and improve on the African performance at the Olympics, and not to be beaten in the first round.

The BFN president noted that there had been huge improvement in the game with the participation of 14 countries against nine in the last edition.

He stated that there had also been great improvement in the quality of play.

Nigeria defeated Uganda 3-0 to qualify for the semi-finals, while Ghana defeated South-Africa 2-3.

Mauritius and Egypt also qualified for semi-finals after defeating Algeria and Zambia respectively with same score of 3-0.
