An accounts officer, Opeyemi Adeyemi, was on Monday docked before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing N285,500 from four customers.
Adeyemi, 32, is an employee at the Kosofe Branch of Infinity Microfinance Bank in Lagos.
The defendant, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, said that Adeyemi committed the offence between July and August, 2019.
Ihiehie said that Adeyemi, whose duty entailed processing loan repayments for customers, collected money from four customers and converted the money to his personal use.
“It was an auditor of the bank who discovered the theft when he was reconciling customers’ loan repayment records,” Ihiehie said.
The Nigeria News Agency reports that stealing from one’s employer contravenes Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and it is punishable with seven years imprisonment.
The Magistrate, Mrs Ejiro Kubeinje, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Kubeinje ordered that the surety should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until Nov. 5 for mention.
