Be more safety conscious during harmattan, Safety Commission DG urges motorists

The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, has called on motorists across the state to be more safety conscious, especially during harmattan, with its attendant poor visibility.

A statement issued by the Assistant Director, Public Affairs of the commission, Mrs Adewunmi Okoh, on Thurday in Lagos, quoted Mojola as urging motorists to take extra precaution, particularly during this period.

Mojola said visibility could be particularly poor during the early hours of the day and late in the evening due to the dry and dusty north-east winds synonymous with the harmattan season.

He noted that the current weather condition might reduce the vision of a driver by 200 metres, thereby creating hazardous driving conditions, if care was not taken.

According to him, in severe weather conditions, road signage and markings may be difficult to see, as drivers need to use fog lights or low beam lights instead of the high beam which may cause hinder the possibility of seeing what is ahead.

As a standard precondition, Mojola said that motorists should head out early to their destinations to avoid speeding whilst on highways.

He further said that motorists should maintain significant distance with other road users and vehicles in order to guard against sudden application of brake which could lead to accidents.

The director-general, however, said that motorists could use hazard lights, in case of extremely low or poor visibility.

He added that motorists should also desist from usage of cracked windscreens, saying this could also reduce visibility when driving under harsh weather conditions.

Mojola also stressed the need for motorists to ensure that items, such as fire extinguisher, extra tyre, torch, jack, spanners and C-caution sign, among others were always in their vehicles, in case of any eventuality.
