A 42-year-old businessman, Adebola Alamutu, on Tuesday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding his sister of N3 million.
The Police arraigned Adebola on charges of obtaining under false pretences and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the two charges.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Chinalu Nwadione, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Aug. 4 in Lagos.
Nwadione said that the defendant obtained N3 million from the complainant, Mrs Oluwakemi Alamutu under the pretext of investing the money for her.
The prosecutor said that the defendant told the complainant that he would purchase an herbal product called “Kick and Star.”
She said that the defendant collected the money and diverted it for his personal use.
“Instead purchasing the product, the defendant converted the money to personal use and refused to pay the complainant her money,” Nwadione said.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Adedayo, granted the defendant bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adedayo said that one of the sureties must be blood relation of the defendant.
She then adjourned the case until Oct. 21 for mention.
