Boxing: Adequate training, exposure, hallmark of successful boxers — Ikhouria

Isaac Ikhouria, a retired Light Heavyweight boxer, on Friday said that Nigerian boxers need training and exposure ahead of the African Games in August in Morocco.

“I don’t see any shortcut to success, even if there are, they are shortlived, we need to put in hard work before we start looking out for the desired result,” Ikhouria told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

“Training and exposure are two things you don’t joke with if you intend to be a boxer of international repute, it doesn’t come cheap.

“We need to be deliberate and pro-active, we have the talent no doubt, and for the umpteenth time we need to do more, in my days we had regular bouts.

“All we need is commitment, so we can do well not just in Africa but at the world level too,’’ the ex-boxer said.

NAN reports that Ikhouria won a bronze medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany; and a year later, he won a gold medal at the 1973 All-Africa Games

NAN also reports that the 2019 All-Africa Games will hold from Aug. 19 to Aug. 31 in Rabat, Morocco.
