Businessman in court over alleged truck theft

A businessman, Afolabi David, 44, accused of stealing a truck given to him on hire purchase, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the Prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem, the defendant  stole the truck with registration number AGL 363 XU from one Mr Lateef Omotayo.

Akeem said that David stole the truck in conspiracy with other persons still at large, sometime in 2015, at Gbagada area of Lagos State.

“The complainant gave the defendant the truck on hire purchase for N5.5 million; he only made a payment of N500,000 to the complainant before absconding with the truck.

“All efforts made to reach him or retrieve the truck were unsuccessful until he was sighted and arrested,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor noted that stealing  contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section prescribes three years’ imprisonment for the ofence.

The Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Layinka, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until May 27 for mention.
