The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saint has carried out road maintenance work to fill pot-holes with stones and sand on deplorable Akwuke road, outskirt of Enugu metropolis in Enugu South Local Government Area.
The church, however, was joined by some public-spirited individuals and tricycle riders of the area to make the road motorable by filling the large pot holes on the road with stones and sand.
The Leader of the church in the council area, President Lawrence Anunta, said on Sunday that the church had been working on the bad portions of Akwuke Road to discharge its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Anunta disclosed that the church members all over Africa about this time every year chose a service project to work on in their neighborhood to better the community as part of their church CSR.
“We are here trying to fix the road. We are having all African service project where you look at community and chose the project that the community will benefit from.
“It is a programme we are having at about this time every year all over Africa. We partner neighbourhoods, friends, government, groups and owners of the project to better the lives of the people.
“Today we have chosen to work on Akwuke Road, Lomalina Estate Junction and Agbani Magistrates Court Road.
“We are filling the pot holes on the road with stone and sand to make it motorable. As you can see that members of the community and tricycle operators are here with us fixing the roads as well,’’ he said.
Earlier, the Town Union President of Akwuke 1, Mr Chibuzo Ngene, expressed gratitude to the church which he described as God sent.
Ngene said that the maintenance of the road had been an annual service by the community, adding that the church came when they were still preparing for this year’s maintenance on the road.
The Chairman of Tricycle Operators, Akwuke Zone, Mr Gabriel Aniagu, commended the Church and House of Assembly member representing Enugu South, Mrs Onyinye Ugwu, for their assistance
He noted that tricycle operators had been battling with the bad road for years.
Aniagu commended Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for his stride on infrastructure development in the state.
He, however, called for governor’s intervention on Akwuke road to make movement easier for the inhabitants of the community.
