Prof. Jaiye Dukiya, the Director, Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, media organisations to create a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) unit to effectively report disaster risk across the country.

Jaiye made the call while delivering a lecture on Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Reduction to editorial staff members of the Nigeria News Agency on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the establishment of DRR unit would help to mitigate climate change and address disaster reduction risk in the country.

“The creation of the unit will address various areas of disaster risk reduction through effective dissemination of information on any kind of disaster in the country.

“The idea will also create an opportunity for journalists who are covering areas related to flooding, climate change, ecosystem among others to effectively report on them.

“It will also create room to train journalists on disaster risk reduction management to become professionals in the system.

“The training will help the journalists to be well equipped  and help them to develop and acquire more knowledge and experience in the system.

“When we have such well-equipped journalists, they will help to enlighten people on how to manage the situation.

“How we can select such journalists maybe through training and reading documents related to disaster risk reduction management to better equip them,’’ he said.

Dukiya said that the centre had engaged in several sensitisation campaigns on the disaster risk management across the country.

He noted that the centre had also visited some schools in the Federal Capital Territory for sensitisation campaign, adding that the sensitisation would help to address in the disaster risk reduction.
“We are targeting secondary school students to educate them on the importance of disaster risk reduction in the country.

“The aim of the sensitisation is to give the students idea on what to do, when they are being faced with disaster challenge at any time,’’ he said.

He said that the centre had a strong working relationship with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies, adding that the collaboration was to enable them tackle disaster related issues.

Dukiya said that the objective of the centre was to provide a holistic academic approach to intended participants to understand disaster risk management and development issues.

The Centre, which is in the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna was established in 2009 along with other five training centres in the six geopolitical zones to mainstream DRR into education curriculum.  (NAN)
