Lagos April 16, 2019 Mr Nasiru Mohammed, the Vice-President of the Fives Federation of Nigeria (FFN), on Tuesday appealed for government full involvement in fives sport to enhance its development.

Mohammed, who is also the federation’s head coach, told The News Agency of Nigeria that fives was an interesting game in which the country stood to benefit a lot from.

He said that the last time Nigerian fives federation travelled out of the country for a competition was when it went to London in 1998.

Mohammed said that fives was a British game that was played on the wall but was introduced to Nigeria in 1923 by an educationist and lamented the sad low recognition accorded it.

He said that there was no government participation the fives sports, adding that it was only Lagos State that had a fives court in the whole of South-West states.

The vice-president said that with the way athletes were playing the game in Nigeria now, they could only compete and win their counterparts from Britain.

He said that “it would have been better to show our own athletes that when it comes to fives Nigeria will always win”.

He therefore, appealed to the government, including the states governors to build fives courts in their domains.

Mohammed said that the athletes needed to be encouraged to get the best from them if they go out for competitions.
