Commission issues Certificates of Return to 16 LG chairmen in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti issued Certificates of Return to the 16 elected local government chairmen in the state.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the election, which was conducted on Saturday, was rejected by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The EKSIEC had declared all candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winners of all the 16 chairmanship and councillorship seats.

The Commission’s Chairman, Justice Jide Aladejana, said the electoral body was bound by law to issue the certificates to the elected officers.

He said that the commission would not be deterred by any form of threat in conducting its statutory and independent duties

We are not under any political party and should not be dragged into any party crisis, we are independent and we must remain so,” he said.

The EKSIEC chairman urged the elected officials to consider their election as a call to service for the benefit of the people.

Don’t forget the people you represent and the responsibilities upon you; make sure you deliver on your mandate,” he said.

The PDP had at a news conference addressed on Sunday by the State Chairman, Mr Gboyega Oguntuase, rejected the results, saying it did not reflect the true  outcome of the election.

”The local government election results announced by EKSIEC are incorrect and unacceptable to the party and people of the state.

”We shall not relent in fighting this cause to its logical conclusion, “he had said.
