The New Era Construction Company says it will build 160 shops and relocate roadside traders to New Haven Market in Enugu State capital under Public Private Partnership arrangement.

Mr Chinedu Ozoude, the company’s site engineer spoke to the Nigeria News Agency on Tuesday.

Ozoude said the company would construct the 160 shops in New Haven market in Enugu within the next one year.

“ I started seven months ago and I am optimistic that I will meet up with the time.

“I am expected to construct about 160 shops; I have built up to 90; the contract is being done under Public Private Partnership arrangement’’.

He said that the aim of the project was to change the face of the market and make it one of the first class markets in Nigeria.

The site engineer said that the company had done it in other states, and since its operators were from Enugu, New Era Company came to build as its contribution to the state.

He said the gesture would help the state to increase its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) rather than allowing traders to stay on the road and cause obstruction.

“I have constructed over 90 shops, drainage channels in the car park and also reconstructed the car park to make it look good.

“The company is also constructing toilet facilities to provide convenience in the marketplace. We are trying to put street lights in the market to extend business till 7pm.

“When I started the work newly, I had some challenges as the traders were having issues with the union.

“The traders thought that the state government had given the chairman money to execute the project until I explained to them that the state Executive Council approved it.

“I have come to develop and not to take over the market. The contract is meant to last for 12 months.

“I had a meeting with roadside traders and they promised to relocate inside the market.

Ozoude said he was mandated to build and handover to the government while the later would receive revenue from the shops.

He however, expressed optimism of recouping the project money from the sale of the shops.
