Cotton: Ekiti Speaker assures farmers of support

Mr Funminiyi Afuye, theSpeaker of Ekiti House of Assembly, has promised necessary legislative support and provisions for farmers to encourage cultivation of cotton in the State.

Afuye gave the assurance on Thursday while receiving a delegation of the National Cotton Association of Nigeria led by its National Vice President, Mrs Lola Adeoye, in his office in Ado- Ekiti.

The speaker expressed the resolve of the legislature to cooperate with the state government as well as other stakeholders to achieve the rural agricultural development agenda of Ekiti.

“The state government is putting in efforts to promote and achieve sustainable food security and creating an agro-based environment through its agriculture and rural development agenda.

“I can assure you that the Assembly is ready to give necessary legislation to support the achievement of agricultural development in Ekiti,” Afuye said.

He called on youths to take advantage of the large expanse of land in the state to venture into cotton production as an avenue to be lifted out of poverty and joblessness.

Earlier, Adeoye had solicited for government intervention in creating a road map for cotton production and eliminating bottlenecks which could discourage investors.

Adeoye said a plan was underway to construct a ginnery in Ekiti for ease of processing cotton by farmers.

She solicited the partnership of government in activities and programmes of the association for the benefit of farmers.
