Court sentences 2 cleaners to 1 year in prison each for stealing from hotel guest

A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced two cleaners, to one year in prison each for stealing a bag containing N170,000 and 900 CFA from a hotel guest.

Magistrate T.A Anjorin-Ajose, sentenced Monday Rupata, 21, Sunday Oloruntunyi, 20,after they pleaded guilty to the charge.

Anjorin-Ajose did not give them an option to pay a fine.

Rupapa and Oloruntunyi, were charged with two counts of conspiracy and theft pleaded guilty to the charges.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Ajaga Agboko told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 17 at Adeola Guest House Ebute-Ero, Lagos Island.

He said that the two defendants stole a bag containing  N170,000 and 900 CFA , belonging to Mrs Lahila Suleiman.

Agboko said that Suleiman who lodge in the guest house where the two convicts worked, forgot her bag under the bed and checked out.

He said that when Suleiman realised that she had forgotten the bag, she returned to the hotel and found out that the bag was missing,

The prosecution said that the two convicts who cleaned the room denied seeing the bag.

After they arrested, he said, they confessed to the crime.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 287 (7) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
