An Upper Area Court Zuba, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 21-year-old labourer, Abubakar Sadiq, to eight months in prison for stealing a generator.

The judge, Alhaji Gambo Garba, convicted and sentenced Sadiq after he  pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

Graba, however, gave Sadiq an option to pay a N50, 000 for being a first time offender,.

He advised the convict to stay away from crimes and be of good behaviour.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Mr Chinedu Ogada, told the court that Frank Ogbodo and Frankly Ejiofor, all of Dawaki village, Abuja reported the case at the Dutse Alhaji Police Station, Abuja, on May 30.

Ogada told the court that on the same date at about 12: 5 a.m., Sadiq scaled the fence of the complainants’ house and stole his Tiger generator set valued at N 35, 000.

He said that the complainant caught Sadiq in the act while trying to escape with the stolen generator.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation Sadiq confessed to stealing in the same house on three occasions.

Ogada alleged that the Sadiq had stolen two motorcycles valued at N244,000, a 32 inches plasma television set worth N30, 000, six pairs of shoes valued N50,000 and N 75,000 cash and clothing  valued N5,500.

Ogada said that the Tiger generator was recovered from Sadiq, but efforts to recover the previous items stolen failed.

He said that Sadiq tried to escape from lawful custody.

The police said the offence contravened of the provisions of sections 348, 278 and 172 of the Penal Code.
