COVID-19: Bauchi Govt closes markets, establishes ICUs

The Bauchi State Government has closed markets and established two Intensive Care Units (ICU)) and isolation centres as measures to curb the spread of Coronavirus in the state.


Alhaji Baba Tela, the Chairman of the Special Task Force on COVID-19 in the state, disclosed this at a news conference in Bauchi on Wednesday.

He said the state government has directed that all markets should be closed from March 26 till further notice.

“Pharmacies, sellers of food items, supermarkets selling essential products filling stations and bakeries are to remain open.

“But to adhere strictly on instructions given on environmental cleanliness and hygiene to reduce the spread of the virus.

“Similarly officials of the National Union of Road Transport (NURTW)) are advised not to overload, it should be three passengers in a vehicle,” he said.

He urged the officials  to encourage passengers to wear masks and use handkerchiefs while coughing or sneezing.

Tela, who is also the Deputy Governor of the state, said two ICUs were established and two isolation centres.

He said ICUs are established in ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi and Federal Medical Centre Azare along two isolation centres for any eventuality on COVID-19.

“Government has procured oxygen, ventilators and personal protective equipment to face any threat of spread of the viral virus.

“We have a task force team on ground and also training clinicians to build their capacities for management of any outbreak in the state,” he said.

The chairman said the government has embarked on a programme to enlighten the public on the dangers, symptoms and prevention of COVID-19.

He however maintained that the state recorded only one confirmed case in the person of Gov. Bala Mohammed and is awaiting results of 28 samples taken.

Tela assures citizens of the state government readiness and determination to strengthen the capacity of health personnel to deal with emergency cases.
