Ukraine says five years of Russian aggression and forceful occupation of its territory, Crimea led to the killing of over 13,000 Ukrainians with over 30,000 injured and 1.5 million people displaced.

The Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Valerii Aleksandruk, who disclosed this in Abuja, decried the human rights violation against the Ukraine.

In 2014, Russia embarked on military force to seize the Crimean peninsula, and later supported a violent separatist movement in eastern Ukraine.

According to him, five years ago, Russia gravely violated international law when it started on a course of action to illegally occupy Crimea.

“Today, more than 13, 000 Ukrainians have been killed, 30, 000 wounded and 1.5 million people displaced with 70 in captivity.

“Added to this, there has been significant destruction within the Donbas region, usurpation of Ukrainian property in occupied Crimea and gross human rights violations by the occupying powers.

“There has also been  breaches of norms of international humanitarian law and the political persecution of Ukrainian citizens all aimed at suppressing any manifestation of anti-occupation sentiment.

“There has also been sweeping and large-scale militarisation of the occupied peninsula,” he said.

The envoy, therefore, implored Russia to respect the Minsk agreement.

According to him, Russia has agreed in the meeting held with the heads of governments of Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine to ceasefire and to withdraw heavy weapons from the part of the country belonging to Ukraine.

“The meeting agreed on the resolution of conflict by politico-diplomatic means based on the Minsk agreement, which envisaged ceasefire and heavy weapons withdrawal from Ukraine territories,” he said.

The ambassador said that the result of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine was dramatic and unprecedented in post-war Europe.

According to him, five years ago Russia gravely violated international law when it started on a course of action to illegally occupy Crimea.

He said that the illegal and fake referendums that Russia staged in Crimea had not been recognised by the international community.

“However, reluctance to react robustly emboldened the criminal Kremlin regime to expand its aggression into new areas, notably its occupation of parts of Ukraine’s Donbas region.

“On Nov. 25, 2018, Russia attacked Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait and Black Sea international waters and once again committed an open act of aggression against Ukraine,” he said. (NNN)
