Critics blames Britain for inviting China’s Hikvision to security fair

Critics on Monday blamed the British Government for allowing a U.S. blacklisted Chinese technology firm specialising in surveillance to join a trade fair on policing and security.

The Munich-based World Uighur Congress expressed disappointment over the invitation by the UK Government.

“I am responding to reports that China’s Hikvision will attend next month’s Security and Policing 2020 exhibition in the Southern English town of Farnborough.”

Hikvision, based in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, employs 34,000 people worldwide and runs research centres in Britain and Canada.

It pride itself as the world’s leading provider of innovative security products and solutions, specialising in video surveillance systems.

The U.S. Department of Commerce, however, blacklisted Hikvision and other Chinese firms in 2019, over links to internment camps that rights groups said were used to forcibly re-educate China’s mainly Muslim Uighur minority in Western region of Xinjiang.

According to Natalie Bennett, a Green Party member of Britain’s Upper House of Parliament, the Lords, security comes from supporting Human Rights and democracy.

Bennett said that British Government’s decision to allow Hikvision to participate in the security exhibition was a very wrong approach.

A lawmaker, Bob Seely, from Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives, said he hoped the Home Office would reconsider Hikvision’s participation in the government-backed event.

“We need to stop having an ethical bypass when it comes to China and hi-tech.

“If we are going to proclaim UK values and standards, we need at least the appearance of consistency,” he said.
