CSOs call on govts. to ensure water, sanitation facilities exist in strategic locations

Society for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN), has called on state governors to ensure that water, sanitation and hygiene facilities exist in strategic locations to ensure the promotion of effective hand washing behaviour change.

Mr Attah Benson, the NEWSAN National Coordinator said this in a statement to commemorate the 2019 Global Hand Washing Day with the theme: “Clean Hands for All”.

According to Benson, hand washing with soap at critical times is the easiest, most effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

“The theme for the 2019 emphasises to the Principle of “ Leave No One Behind” in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Hand washing with soap is an important part of keeping food safe, preventing diseases and helping children to strong.

“We wish to appreciate the current effort and concern of the Federal Government in improving its intervention in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector.

“We hereby call on the different state governments to reciprocate the Federal Government effort by ensuring that water, sanitation and hygiene facilities exist in strategic locations in their states.

“These locations include schools, hospitals/clinics, motor parks, markets/ shopping centres, bus stops/ transit stations, among other, ” he said.

He however called on the citizens to ensure that facilities at these locations were maintained and put into good use to ensure the promotion of effective hand washing behaviour change,” he said.

Attah added that all should be reminded of the importance of hand washing with soap at critical times, especially before eating, cooking, feeding children and after using the toilet, or playing with animals/ pets, among others.

He therefore said that NEWSAN was a coordinating network of over 300 Civil Society Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations and Community Based Organisations in water, sanitation and hygiene registered in Nigeria.

He said that NEWSAN’s mandate “is to enhance access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and services for all in Nigeria.’’
