Culture Institute cautions on globalisation

Mr Abdulhamid Sheriff, the Director of Travels and Tourism, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), has called for measures to checkmate the effect of globalisation on the country’s culture.

Sheriff made the remark in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency in Abuja on Friday.

He said that there was the need to check the trend to avoid being eroded by foreign culture.

According to him, culture is a crucial tool toward a sustainable national development.

Sheriff said that if the country’s cultural potential was fully harnessed, it would contribute to the development of other sectors of the economy.

He said that 180 million people would generate wealth for the country if priority was given to the culture and tourism industry.

“Tourism is all about sharing of wealth and experiences. A country with such a population, 36 states and 774 local governments has unique and peculiar cultures.

“If protected and conserved, these cultures will go a long way in enhancing the development of the economy,’’ he said.

He urged the Federal Government to fast track measures aimed at the development of the country through culture and tourism.

“The government should review the 2005 National Policy on Arts and Culture, with a view to addressing the existing challenges confronting the sector.

“The government must ensure that Nigerian cultures stand out from the rest of the world.
