Divorce currently most worrisome issue in Nigeria – WRAPA

Women’s Right Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) says the high rate of divorce in Nigeria is currently one of the serious issues stagnating the country’s socio-economic development.

The National Chairperson of WRAPA, Hajiya Saudatu Mahdi, stated this at the 4th Annual Ramadan lecture series for women in Birnin Kebbi, on Thursday.

“Divorce now is rampant, and is actually the most disturbing issue in this country, especially among Muslims,” she said.

Mahdi also warned that the trend could have serious repercussions on children’s development.

She urged the state government and traditional rulers to ensure that laws were enacted to strictly minimise or curtail the menace.

Also speaking, the Former Minister of State Foreign Affairs, Hajiya Salamatu Hussaini, enjoined northern states’ governors to provide support and encouragement for Girl-Child education.

“Youths should also be empowered to encourage them shun drugs and become productive members of the society,” Hussaini said.

She also expressed worry over growing criminal activities in the Northern parts of the country.

“The only solution to reverse such ungodly activities is to educate women and empower youth,” the former minister said.

She also commended the state and federal governments for their support to education; and called for more in order to halt the spate of rising insecurity in the country.
