Don calls for establishment of weather control centres in schools, govt. offices

A Professor of Applied Meteorology at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, Prof. James Aremu, on Tuesday, called for the establishment of weather control centres in schools and government offices in the country.

Aremu made the call at the NDA 12th Professional Inaugural lectures with the theme “Weather Education: Sustainable Panacea to Human Environmental Challenges’’ held at the academy in Kaduna.

Aremu said that the establishment of weather stations and more control centres in all higher institutions, government offices, and Local Government headquarters would be very useful to the local inhabitants in planning their activities.

“It will also help them in taking decisions that involves weather vis-a-vis agriculture, military activities, economic activities, architecture and location of things.

“The knowledge of weather should be of utmost concern to humans,’’ he said.

He advised that more slots be given to weather news by  media stations.

“The idea of using less than four minutes towards the tail end of nine o’clock network news on NTA to talk about weather should be reviewed and native languages be used to explain them.

He also said that geography must be made compulsory from primary to secondary school.

“The idea of pairing geography and another subject at the time of selecting courses in secondary school must stop.

“Geography should be a compulsory subject like maths and english, so that weather vagaries via-a-vis impact on human life will be on the decrease if not avoided totally.

“Trained and competent meteorologists should be employed to head the National and State Meteorological offices and departments, politics should not be played when it comes to issues relating to weather’’, Aremu said.

Earlier, the commandant of NDA, Maj.- Gen. Jamil Sarham, who was represented by the deputy commandant, AVM Ibrahim Ali, said that the academy would soon introduce meteorology course.

“Meteorology is one of the useful courses that can be applied in the professional development of our cadets both in the Navy, Air force and Army.

“However, we in NDA do not mount courses where we don’t have the critical mass of scholars.

“We are now building on the scholarship, we have gotten a few more people who read meteorology, but we can only mount the department when we have skilled professional individuals in place, we are going to bring the course online very soon’’,  he said.
