Prof. Hippolite Amadi, a professor of medical engineering and technology from Imperial College, London, said there was a need for Nigeria to develop home-grown technology to solve its health challenges.

Amadi said this while on a visit to the ministry on Friday, a statement signed by Abdulganiyu Aminu, spokesman of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, stated.

The statement said Amadi was received by Dr Ekanem Udoh, Director, Department of Science and Technology Promotion of the ministry, on behalf of the minister, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu.

According to Amadi, technology drives healthcare adding that no country can solve its problems if it is dependent wholly on foreign technology.

“Technology must understand the environment, technology is a lifestyle,” the statement quoted Amadi as saying.

Amadi said his invention “Bubble cpap Machine”, a phototherapy machine, was designed, localised and patented in Nigeria to save the lives of Nigerian babies.

According to him, the machine is one out of many he has created for low income  countries of the world.

He disclosed that he had saved the lives of more than 12 million Nigerian babies with his technology.

Amadi added that Neo-Natal hospitals in Minna, Abakaliki, Ilorin, Asaba and Gwagwalada teaching hospital were already patronising his technological inventions.

In his remarks, Udoh assured Amadi of the readiness of the ministry to assist him in popularising his invention.

He further said that the ministry had always been encouraging inventors through the Presidential Standing Committee on Inventions and Innovation.
