A 47-year-old driver, Sunday Odia, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, charged with ramming onto a motorcycle with a passenger, and causing the death of the passenger, Mr Fred Orunuebho.
The defendant, who lives in Agege area of Lagos, is facing charges of reckless driving, manslaughter and driving without licence.
He, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, ASP Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 18, at 2.30p.m.
“Odia recklessly drove a Volkswagen Golf with registration No. JJJ 730 EG, causing death of a man,” he said.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant drove the car on a public highway in a dangerous manner without care and attention to other road users.
The alleged offences contravene Sections 7 (1), (8), 28 (1) and 29 (1) of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 and one surety in like sum.
Sule-Amzat directed that the surety must be gainfully employed and have evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until July 25 for mention.
