Ilorin, Jan. 30, 2019 (NAN) Ahead of its annual Inter-house Sports Competition, Hajiya Hafsoh Adebayo, Principal of Federal Government College, Ilorin (FGCI), has described sports as essential for students’ excellent performance in their academics.
Adebayo made the assertion on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Federal Government College, Ilorin.
She said that though the school was an academic environment where students participated mainly in academic activities, there was need for extra curriculum activities, like sports.
“This place is an academic environment where they do mostly learning, but there is need for other activities such as sports to take place.
“Sports help them in their education because it is not just the exercise; it encourages their determination to make it and that zeal can be extended to the education aspect.
“It is an opportunity for them to have a goal, foster unity and encourage cooperation among themselves,” Adebayo said.
The principal said that in acknowledgment of the role of sports in development of the child, inter-house sports competition was made an annual event in all unity schools in the country.
“Though it comes once in a year, it is a time for the students to have the freedom to participate in any sport of their choice and develop their physical strength.
“The road walk and cross country race is an avenue for all of them to take part, as not all of them can participate in the forthcoming inter-house sport competition,” she said.
NAN reports that the students started preparations for the Inter House Sports Competition since their resumption for the second term with road walks and cross country race competition held last Saturday.
Seven hostels in the school will participate in the events lined up for the competition scheduled to hold on Feb. 9. (NAN)
