Election body rejects AKP demand to annul over 14,000 Istanbul votes

However, the YSK has yet to decide on the main request from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) demanding a re-run of the March 31, municipal elections in Istanbul over fraud allegations.

On Saturday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP had submitted to the YSK a list of 14,712 civil servants who were sacked after the failed 2016 military coup.

The party had asked the YSK to cancel those votes cast in Istanbul.

The outcome might have changed the vote result in favour of the AKP had the YSK approved the demand.

Following a recount of mostly invalid votes, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) said its candidate, Ekrem Imamoglu, won the Istanbul mayoral race with a slim margin of around 14,000 votes.

On April 16, the AKP formally requested that the YSK cancel the vote results in Istanbul over alleged “irregularities’’ and called for the elections to be repeated.

The next day, the provincial election council handed Imamoglu the official mandate for Istanbul mayor, confirming his victory over AKP candidate Binali Yildirim, the former prime minister.

The YSK is still to announce the final results.
