Bida, (Niger) Feb. 20, 2019 The Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has urged politicians across the country to play politics based on conscience, maturity and decorum.

Abubakar made the appeal on Wednesday ahead of the general elections rescheduled for Feb. 23 and March 9 respectively.

He underscored the need for all Nigerians, irrespective of religious, political or ethnic affiliations, to put national interest above self interest.

The traditional ruler said that making national interest as their focus was the only way to ensure free, fair, credible and peaceful polls.

Abubakar also said that would also lead to promoting peace, unity and socio economic development of Nigeria.

“The country must exist harmoniously before its citizens can pursue their various concerns, including politics” he said.

The monarch stated that only God gives and takes leadership from whomsoever he wishes and at the time he pleases.

He urged youths in his emirate, the state and the country at large, to shun being used as thugs during the forthcoming general elections across the country.

“I urge youths not to allow themselves to be used by any unscrupulous politician to carry out electoral malpractice.

“They should not engage in violence of any kind during the elections.

“I am urging Nigerians to show more understanding over the postponement of the general elections and support INEC to conduct free, fair and credible polls” he said.

Abubakar also urged Nigerians not to be discouraged, but strive to carry out their civic responsibilities on the days the rescheduled elections would hold for democracy sake.

According to him, only participatory democracy can sustain civil rule; as such the electorate and other stakeholders must shun all acts capable of destabilising the country.

He stressed that politics devoid of bitterness and rancour, would facilitate peace and development for the country.

“We must respect constituted authorities and ensure that we live peacefully with one another, for the general development of the country.

“I urge everyone at this moment of our political journey to eschew bitterness and not to contemplate shedding the blood of one another ” he said.

Abubakar also appealed to Nigerians to offer special prayers for peaceful, credible and violence-free elections in the country in the remaining days ahead before the conduct of the polls.
